LESSONS FROM THE LAND
Nunavut is an exciting place for designers to learn design that is grounded in local landscape and culture. To help share this excitement, the NuALA Communications Committee learned from local knowledge holders and developed a set of cards to express the connection between plants and people in the Territory - knowledge that is important to understand as Landscape Architects practicing in Nunavut. These cards will be shared with component organizations, the academic community, and associated professions to help grow the understanding of the NuALA and the meaningful work we are fortunate to be part of.
The front of each card shows one of four plants considered significant to Nunavimmuit, with a backdrop of colour found in the local landscape. The back of the card shares information about the plant and how Nunavimmuit have traditionally used the plant. Placed together, the four cards create the NuALA logo. Check out NuALA on Instagram to see the cards!
We are grateful for the knowledge shared by Elder Aalasi Joamie (shared through the book Edible and Medicinal Arctic Plants; An Inuit Elder’s Perspective), and Caroline Ipeelie. Nakurmiik!
